| Dave's older brothers and sister gave him a headstart in music, and he was already planning to join a band by the age of 10. He joined his first group, The Mammoths, aged 13. This later developed into a more serious group, The Newpolitans, but he got tired of playing bass and joined another local group, The Velvetones so he could start writing. The Velvetones never really progressed to anything beyond the local Hull circuit, so in 1988, although studying for a PhD in Psychology, he dropped everything when Paul asked him to join The Beautiful South. He has put together most of the melodies to match Paul's excellent lyrics and has definitely contributed hugely to the Beautiful South's unique sound over the years.
